Some specific deities in the pantheon may have their own preferences for what they like to see offered, but in addition there something to be said for treating an offering as a sacrifice from yourself in some ways. If you have a favourite treat, or a snack, or take food up to your room, it a sacrifice to say "this is so good and I want it, but you get it first/you get to share it with me" and either put the whole thing (like say if it a bar of really good chocolate still wrapped) on the altar for a day before having any of it, or putting aside a small portion for the gods.
